With obesity now affecting almost one-in-four adults in Abu Dhabi, the timely upcoming ‘A-Z of Obesity Treatment’ conference will address this issue head-on at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Abu Dhabi, on Saturday, 16 May 2009.
Organised by Abu Dhabi University and Aim Medical Education, this one-day conference gives health practitioners a solid understanding of the issues surrounding obesity in the UAE and provides practical skills on how to treat overweight and obese patients.
Obesity is a well-established risk factor for many other medical problems such as stroke, joint problems and certain cancers as well as reducing the individual’s life expectancy. In 2007, the UAE ranked second highest worldwide for diabetes prevalence followed closely by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait.
Dr Tahira Rashid, Director of Medical Education at Aim events said the “A-Z of Obesity Treatment conference provides essential learning for all primary care doctors, nurses and health specialists working in the UAE”
“Due to the severe health risks to the patient and the prevalence of obesity in this region, this event is not only timely but geographically essential” Dr Rashid said.
“The conference is split into two sessions with the morning featuring relevant presentations from practicing doctors. The afternoon is dedicated to 4 patient case studies providing hands-on experience of how to effectively treat obese patients with the added incentive of providing six category 1 CME HAAD accreditation hours.”
The four patient case study examples will be discussed live on stage by a group of specialists including a dietician, endocrinologist, physiotherapist, bariatric surgeon and internist. This team of specialists along with the audience will assess various treatment options available for patients with varying degrees of obesity.
