EAD’s Environmental Competition Exhibition Inaugurated

The winning entries submitted by the students from Government and Private schools during the Environment Agency- Abu Dhabi (EAD) Environmental Competition for the academic year 2008/2009 are being displayed at a one-week exhibition held at Khalidiya Mall in Abu Dhabi.

The Competition was sponsored by Shell Abu Dhabi and organized in coordination with the UAE Ministry of Education and the Abu Dhabi Emirate education zones and Abu Dhabi Educational Council. It was open to all Abu Dhabi school students, from Kindergarten level to Secondary school level and was held under the theme CO2 Kick the Habit. The competition focused on Climate Change and highlighted the message to students that making positive lifestyle changes can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

H.E Majid Al Mansouri, Secretary General of EAD, inaugurated the competition exhibition on Thursday (April 30, 2009). The inauguration was attended by Dr. Nejib Zaafrani, Managing Director of Shell Abu Dhabi and Marcello Larizza, Manager of Khalidiya Mall.

The exhibition, which will continue until May 4, includes a number of activities for children in its Kids’ Corner. This will include coloring sessions; learn how to reuse, story telling, face painting and a puppet show. Three of the children’s favorite characters will also be present at the exhibition. In addition number of youth from the voluntary social programme “Onak ya watan” will help in organizing this event in addition to McDonalds who will provide free meals.

A total number of 182 schools participated in the competition and 1,552 entries were submitted including artwork, articles and research papers.

Kindergarten students submitted around 372 drawings under the theme Trees: The Lungs of the Earth, while primary schools submitted 735 paintings under the theme Our Earth Has a Fever. Upper primary schools submitted 173 short stories on the under the theme Act Now! Save Energy, Save the Earth. Intermediate schools submitted 145 posters under the theme Kick the CO2 Habit at Home.

Moreover, students aged 15 and above were given a choice to either write a magazine article under the theme Detoxifying From Our CO2 Addiction: A Possibility or a Dream? or research the theme How Willing Are People to Kick the CO2 Habit? They submitted 66 article and 61 research papers.

The first three positions in each category will be awarded prizes in an award ceremony, scheduled to be held on May 4, 2009 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Abu Dhabi.
