First Gulf Bank Offers Distinguished Student Scholarships to Ten UAE Nationals
(29 June 2008)

In a move that underscores its commitment to the community, First Gulf Bank, has signed an agreement with the Scholarship Coordination Office to provide scholarships to ten UAE Nationals under the Distinguished Student Scholarship (DSS) scheme.

“These scholarships allow a new generation of Emirati youth to increase their skills in the financial sector, which will then positively contribute to the development of the UAE,” said André Sayegh, CEO of First Gulf Bank. “We recognise that education is the cornerstone of any country’s future. FGB has a responsibility – on both a corporate and a social level - to provide opportunities for UAE Nationals.”

“Development of our youth ensures the development of UAE, which will ultimately be of benefit to all.” added Sayegh.

Under the scholarship, Emirati students will study for a Bachelor’s degree in either banking or finance at prestigious international universities abroad. The scholarship is automatically renewed until graduation, and successful students would be in a position to work in any industry or field after graduation.

HE Ahmed Al Hameeri, Secretary General of Ministry of Presidential Affairs and Deputy Chairman of the Board of the SCO said “It is with great pleasure that First Gulf Bank have joined forces with the Distinguished Student Scholarship scheme. The late UAE President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan recognized that ‘A country’s greatest achievement lies in building generations of educated and knowledgeable youth,’ and we are thrilled that First Gulf Bank is supporting this scheme, for both the individual scholarship winners and the UAE as a whole.”

“At First Gulf Bank we recognise that choosing to study abroad is a difficult decision and there are many associated challenges,” added Sayegh. “By taking care of the financial burden, students can focus solely on their education. While they would be more than welcome to join FGB, there is no commitment, we are merely fulfilling our social duty.”

Created in 1999 under the direct supervision and guidance of H.H. Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Minister of Presidential Affairs, the Distinguished Student Scholarship promotes the development of the country through higher education. The privileges associated with the scholarship include payment of full university tuition, healthcare insurance, an annual round-trip ticket from the UAE to the student’s place of study and an allowance to cover the cost of academic books. In addition, bonuses are granted to students who achieve the highest levels of academic excellence.
