ADNOC’s ’Green’ HQ Awarded LEED Gold Certification
(23 May 2017)

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company’s, ADNOC, HQ building, on Abu Dhabi’s Corniche, has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, in the category of Building Design and Construction, by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

ADNOC’s HQ uses more than 4,000 litres of recycled grey-water and AC condensate water to flush toilets and irrigate locally sourced plants. The building’s orientation and highly efficient mechanical systems are designed to consume 24 percent less energy than the global baseline standard. LED lighting is also used throughout the building to reduce electricity consumption. Advanced air quality monitoring and filtration equipment ensures high quality pollutant free clean air for employees.

Rashed Saud Al Shamsi, Business and Commercial Support Director at ADNOC, said, "We are very proud to have received this certification which is a great testament to ADNOC’s commitment to sustainable practices and affirms our commitment to not just ‘building green,’ but also ‘living green’."

The interior of ADNOC’s HQ, was designed to stimulate creativity and critical thinking, in a nurturing and supportive environment, that inspires people to innovate, and deliver results. Business floors are laid out to facilitate dialogue and communication throughout the day amongst team members.

At 342 metres high and 65 floors, it is the second tallest building in Abu Dhabi and the 19th tallest office building in the world. It has the highest helipad in the Middle East and the second highest in the world.

Over 75 percent of the waste produced on site during the construction of the building was diverted from landfill and recycled by segregating material at source. Nearly a quarter of the building is constructed from recycled materials and 69.85 percent of timber used came from managed renewable sources.

Although the initiation of the project preceded the development of Abu Dhabi’s own green building initiative, the Estidama Pearl Rating System, the ADNOC HQ is one of the region’s first major projects to drive the sustainable building agenda from the start of the design to the completion of construction, and on into operations and maintenance.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is one of the most popular green building certification programmes used worldwide. Developed by the non-profit U.S. Green Building Council, it includes a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes, and neighbourhoods that help building owners and operators to be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently.
