Global vs. Local Investing Perspectives
(10 May 2017)

Organized by startAD and VentureSouq, the 3rd Annual Angel Rising Investor Education Symposium will convene over 200 industry and community leaders in  Abu Dhabi on Saturday, May 13, 2017, to empower new angel investors and strengthen the potential of Angel Investment in creating a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in the UAE.

This year's symposium explores ‘Global vs. Local Investing Perspectives’ and brings together renowned local and global experts including Sabah Al Binali, private investor, former CIO of SHUAA Capital, Omar Christidis - CEO and founder, ArabNet, , Sharif El-Badawi, partner, 500 Startups and Owen Davis - managing director NYC Seed. The symposium intends to elevate a new class of Angel Investors by providing education on key topics related to Angel Investing, demystify the startup investing landscape, facilitate conversation among community and industry leaders, and ultimately enable and inspire more investors to fuel greater innovation in the UAE.

Ramesh Jagannathan, vice provost for Entrepreneurship Development at NYU Abu Dhabi and managing director of startAD, commented “The summit will empower participants to make tangible commitments to accelerate startup investing in communities across the UAE.  We believe this will create unprecedented opportunities for both investors and entrepreneurs. The development of a broad, sophisticated class of investors is a necessity in a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem, and can be a critical part of the desired solution for the MENA region. In order for a startup ecosystem to flourish, the investor base needs to mature and evolve with the entrepreneur base.”

Sonia Weymuller, founding partner at VentureSouq- “We see that people investing into tech are confident in their ability to pick winners – to discern a smart business model from an unpromising one, a good market opportunity from an average one, a quality management team from a lackluster one.  However, they often are not as confident when it comes to the technical knowledge of how to make an investment - What legal terms should I have in this deal? How is this valuation being determined? What am I expected to do after an investment has been made? A big part of our job at VentureSouq is to get people comfortable not just in picking the right businesses, but also in fully understanding the terms of their investments, and knowing that they are in line with the market. Investor education is a huge part of this task, and we believe Angel Rising is the most comprehensive investor education forum in the region.

Angel Rising will feature a panel discussion on ‘The Investor Food Chain’, a Data Deep Dive on the State of Investments in MENA, Post-investment Management and special spotlight sessions on ' Investment Strategies That Work (and Don’t Work)' and  'Impact Investing'.
