The new season of Abu Dhabi Classics continued on Monday night with a performance by French piano virtuoso Hélène Grimaud at Manarat Al Saadiyat on Saadiyat Island.

The concert followed last week’s stunning season opener which saw the West Australian Symphony Orchestra make its debut appearance in the UAE at Emirates Palace to launch the new Classics season, which is presented by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi).

Grimaud is considered as one of the most exceptional figures in today’s contemporary classical music scene. With her first appearance here in the capital, Grimaud presented pieces from her new album – Water, which combines music from nine composers from the 19th and 20th centuries linked by transitions that draw various musical cultures together in one performance.

Her new album is a mystical arrangement which complements the Abu Dhabi Classics season’s theme and includes pieces inspired by the stories from a 1,001 Nights. Her recordings have been critically acclaimed and awarded numerous accolades, among them the Cannes Classical Recording of the Year, Choc du Monde de la musique, Diapason d’or, Grand Prix du disque, Record Academy Prize (Tokyo), Midem Classic Award and the Echo Award.

Monday night’s performance included music from Maurice Ravel, Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy and Leoš Janáček.

Highlights of the season include a performance by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the return to Abu Dhabi of award-winning Catalan composer Jordi Savall, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse from France and a concert by Grammy and Academy Award-nominated composer and pianist, Stephan Moccio.
