Khalifa University was named the top university in the UAE this month by Times Higher Education (THE) University Rankings.
Khalifa University was ranked in the 501-600 category, out of 980 universities worldwide. This follows the recent announcement on 6th September that the nine-year old university had also received the highest ranking in the UAE in the QS 2016 World University Rankings.
Khalifa University scored the highest in the UAE, in three out of five categories reviewed by THE, including teaching, industry income, and citations, in which faculty research is quoted in other publications. A particular driver in Khalifa University’s high ranking was its level of international engagement, placing 30th worldwide. The university also boasts one of the most favorable faculty-to-student ratios in the UAE.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are the only global performance tables that judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions, including teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. THE reviews 13 performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, which are trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.
"It is an amazing achievement for a university under ten years of age to be named the top institution in the country, not just by one major international ranking, but by two, in less than a month," said Dr. Tod Laursen, President of Khalifa University. "It’s a testament to the quality of our faculty, the ambition of our students, and the support we receive from government and industry. We would not have been able to achieve these without the support of our community and their drive and dedication to succeed. This global recognition will undoubtedly be a catalyst for our community to continue to excel and push forward in our drive to provide the UAE with an internationally recognised education, and innovative research and development."
"This milestone is a testament to the vision of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who envisioned this university as a hub for knowledge and development when he decreed its establishment in 2007," Dr. Arif Al Hammadi, Executive Vice President of Khalifa University, said. "Khalifa University not only aims to succeed on a global scale, but it also aims to provide the UAE with technology and research that will improve the country’s quality of life and provide a long term sustainable economy. Our commitment to these goals is a driving factor in our success, and without a doubt one of the reasons we have received these honors twice in a month. Our students and faculty are conducting real research on real problems and creating innovative, cost efficient and sustainable solutions. This is achieved by the inspiration and follow-up we receive from our wise leadership, as we aspire to achieve the desired excellence."
Khalifa University has previously been listed among the top 100 universities under 50 years of age, being the newest university in the world on that list, according to QS, and this year boasted its largest admission since its founding. The University admitted 690 students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in September, bringing its total number of students to 1911.
With over 70 issued or filed US patents, eleven specialised research centers and institutions and a female student population of 60 per cent (twice the global average for women in science and technology) the university has consistently put itself on the map, locally and globally.
