Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Chairman of Emirates Foundation, the Emirates Foundation has officially launched the 5th edition of 'Think Science' competition 2017.
The nationwide initiative is designed to empower youth to actively engage with the digital and industrial revolution and sharpen their Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics,STEM, skills in line with the Science, Technology and Innovation, STI, policy adopted by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the country’s march towards progress, economic diversification and prosperity.
The competition is part of the Emirates Foundation’s Think Science programme, which aims to encourage, and empower Emirati youth, to design, develop and build science-based innovations and apply scientific skills to addressing the nation’s most pressing challenges.
The competition, which is supported by the Ministry of Education and Abu Dhabi Education Council, will target hundreds of youth from schools and universities across the UAE.
Commenting on the importance of the competition, Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, said, "Nationwide initiatives such as Think Science competition play a key role in enabling youth to put into practice the science curriculum they acquire in the classroom and apply it to real-life situations. Such experiential and hands on science completions will support youth to build their self-confidence and establish a sense of preparedness to pursue a STEM university degrees and careers."
Dr. Ali Rashid Al-Noaimi, Director-General, Abu Dhabi Education Council, said, "While it is very important to invest in mainstreaming science in curricula at an early age and support students in acquiring STI skills, it is equally important to place students in the right environments to see the opportunities that STEM offers to deliver progress, and to get exposure to inspiring role models. The participation of our students in the competition will provide them with invaluable hands-on experience that will ignite their passion and drive to pursue scientific studies and careers."
The deadline for registration and proposals’ submission for the competition is October, 2016, and the announcement of the accepted projects will be made in December, where youth can start the execution of their project.
Speaking about the competition, Maytha Al Habsi, Deputy CEO at Emirates Foundation, said, "We developed the competition five years ago to provide a platform to identify and support the aspiring scientists of tomorrow. Science, Technology and Innovation are at the heart of the country’s knowledge based economy goals and as the national foundation of the UAE we, at Emirates Foundation, are committed to accelerating this process and developing a comprehensive infrastructure through the Think Science Programme."
The online registration for the competition is now open for UAE future scientists who can upload their proposals on the Emirates Foundation website.
