With its sights firmly set on becoming one of the UAE's and the region's most prestigious research focused universities, Abu Dhabi University's Center of Excellence for Smart, Sustainable and Entrepreneurial Cities has awarded 32 research projects a total of up to AED 3,000,000 in research grants. These grant winning research projects were evaluated and selected by a committee of experts and researchers from among 53 applications.
Launched in 2015 with a dedicated budget of more than AED 6 Million, the Center of Excellence for Smart, Sustainable and Entrepreneurial Cities has been the umbrella under which 3 research centers at ADU operate; the Research Center in Sustainable Built Environments, the Research Center in Sustainable Business Processes and the Research Center in Smart Services for Smart Cities. Each of these work closely with the grant winning research teams based on the nature of the corresponding research.
Commenting on the significance of the grants, Dr. Ashraf Khalil Director of Research at Abu Dhabi University explained that this is indeed a very promising step to further strengthen ADU's research profile. "These research grants assert ADU's investment in scientific and applied research, and emphasizes our commitment toward realizing Abu Dhabi's vision of fostering a knowledge-based economy. Throughout the year, the Centre of Excellence for Smart, Sustainable and Entrepreneurial Cities received many innovative and interesting research proposals with their different topics aligned under the interests of one of the 3 Centers. The winning research projects were chosen and awarded the grants based on several criteria that included: merit, relevance to the Centre and the UAE, strength and experience of the research team, appropriateness of the budget as well as potential for publication. So we're looking forward to see the results of these brilliant research endeavors", said Dr. Khalil.
He pointed out that the design, implementation and launch of the Center of Excellence for Smart, Sustainable and Entrepreneurial Cities was an integral part of the University's new strategy; focused on bolstering its scientific and applied research agenda, and generating more research outputs that contribute to the UAE's national development. "In fact, the Centre's name and functions were carefully chosen and aligned with the policy agenda of the Abu Dhabi Government and its Economic Vision 2030, as well as with the research capacity and interests of ADU's renowned faculty. Even the three research centers operating under the Center of Excellence's umbrella have been specially designed to ensure maximum synergy among ADU researchers and to be multidisciplinary and regionally relevant with the potential for international collaboration and industry links", explained Dr. Khalil.
