Municipality Cracks Down On Tobacco And Perfume Retailers Of Harmful Products In Abu Dhabi
(11 July 2016)

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport at Abu Dhabi City Municipality, ADM, has recently launched a sweeping campaign targeting perfume, tobacco and accessory shops covering Baniyas, Al Shawamekh and Al Nahda (north and south). The crackdown is part of ADM's efforts to maintain public safety throughout the city by running a sweeping inspection and monitoring programme that targets service facilities and consumer retail outlets.

The campaign is part of ongoing inspection efforts aimed at tracking and stopping illegal activities that threaten public health, ensuring a high standard of living and a sustainable environment for residents in the city of Abu Dhabi and its suburban areas.

The municipality has called on all community members to cooperate in combating negative practices in breach of applicable laws which promote fake or illegal consumer or therapeutic substances that fall short of the security and safety standards set for these outlets.

The municipality is launching a number of systematic campaigns to verify the implementation of rules and regulations governing community health, protecting the population from any hazardous threats to personal safety or public health from the sale of harmful materials in retail outlets selling perfumes, tobacco, accessories, and other products.

The current crackdown on perfume and tobacco shops, which began at the beginning of June and is still in operation, has so far resulted in the issuing of 27 'offence' tickets to violating shops in implementation of the law governing Cleanliness and Health Conditions of Retail Outlets, No. 11 for 1972.

In similar campaigns launched last year, the municipality confiscated 403 harmful or expired groups of items being sold to consumers
