(18 May 2016)
Two Sides Discuss Ways of Strengthening Cooperation between the UAE, Costa Rica

A delegation from the Republic of Costa Rica led by His Excellency Manuel Gonzalez Sanz, Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited the headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) in a bid to boost cooperation and synergies between the UAE and Costa Rica.

His Excellency Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD welcomed the delegation in the presence of senior ADFD officials.

The two parties discussed areas of cooperation between the Fund and the Government of Costa Rica and explored development opportunities in the country.

During the meeting, His Excellency Al Suwaidi outlined the developmental goals of the Fund and its role in the provision of soft loans to governments of developing countries to enable them to achieve sustainable economic growth. He also highlighted the grant offered by the UAE to finance development projects in emerging economies and explained the process of managing the grant to ensure the proper and timely implementation of the projects.

Al Swuaidi pointed out that in line with its efforts to help developing countries achieve sustainable growth, the Fund works with some 78 developing countries around the world and supports them in achieving the aspirations of their people.

On the subject of accelerating synergies between Costa Rica and ADFD, His Excellency stressed that the Fund is looking to expand its scope and strategic plans to finance more development projects in Central American countries - including Costa Rica.

For his part, His Excellency Manuel Gonzalez Sanz expressed his appreciation to the UAE and Abu Dhabi Fund for Development for their efforts in helping developing countries achieve their primary development goals through financing projects and infrastructure.

His Excellency Manuel Gonzalez Sanz said: “We hope through this visit to build collaboration with Abu Dhabi Fund for Development in several areas of mutual interest to the UAE and Costa Rica that will benefit both our countries. ADFD has considerable expertise in financing and managing development projects on a global level. We are confident that our synergies will open doors to new opportunities for cooperation in the near future.”

The United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Costa Rica have been linked by ties of friendship and cooperation since 1980, when the two governments first decided to establish diplomatic relations.
