Renowned Pakistani qawwali singer Faiz Ali Faiz will be joined by Catalan flamenco guitarist Chicuelo for a performance in Abu Dhabi's Mushrif Central Park this week for the second concert of four in the Umsiyat series.
Umsiyat is being held until March and runs alongside the Abu Dhabi Classics season and Bait Al Oud concerts, embracing the Music and Poetry theme of the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority's (TCA Abu Dhabi) Music Programme.
The series launched on Sunday with a sensational performance by Lebanese singing star Abeer Nehme at the same venue in the UAE capital.
Organised under the Patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, the Umsiyat performances are designed to integrate different forms of music and to translate a poetical dialogue facilitated by shared musical understanding, keeping in line with the Arabic definition of universality. The series combines music and poetry from the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, Lebanon, Pakistan and Turkey and features some of the most renowned artistes in their field.
Wednesday evenings concert will blend music from Pakistan to Andalucia with sacred Sufi and Flamenco songs with a trip into the mystic and nomadic history of gypsy music.
Born in 1962, Faiz Ali Faiz trained in Hindustani classical music and Sufi devotional music, and made numerous recordings for Pakistan's domestic market. In keeping with his love for traditional qawwali, he has recorded a great deal of standard repertoire and much of his work has been a homage to the qawwali master, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. In June 2005, the Faiz Ali Faiz ensemble was joined by Spanish flamenco artists Miguel Poveda, Duquende and Chicuelo for a groundbreaking collaboration at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music. Their performance underlined the common roots of flamenco and qawwali in the subcontinent.
Chicuelo, born in Barcelona, Spain in 1968, began studying the guitar as a boy in the flamenco clubs of Barcelona, where he became a student of Manolo Sanlucar. He worked as a studio musician on recordings by a variety of artists including Tomatito, Duquende, Mayte Martn, Ginesa Ortega, and Joan Manuel Serrat. In 1992, he participated at the World Expo and in Sevilles Flamenco Biennial. Since then, he has toured the world. He also worked with the most renowned flamenco dance companies in Spain, and for the past six years, he has served as musical director for the Shohi-Kojima Japanese Dance Company.
Tickets for the performance, which starts at 8pm are available from AED 50 to AED 200 via ticketmaster.ae.
