The Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi, SCAD, recently held a workshop that brought together a large number statistical experts and other officials from local government agencies at the Fairmont Bab-Al Bahar hotel in Abu Dhabi. The workshop sought to determine statistics of the highest priority in policy and decision-making (tier-one statistics).
During the meeting, SCAD also reviewed the main aspects of the future statistical system of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, focusing on the coordination of statistical needs and capacities of government agencies in the emirate, the development of expertise and recruitment of statistically competent personnel, in addition to the harmonisation of standards, methodologies and to identify priorities and strategic objectives in order to build a unified and advanced statistical system in accordance with the international principles of official statistics as set out in the strategic plan of the centre for 2016 - 2020, which focuses on alignment with the needs of the Abu Dhabi Plan.
The workshop explored the criteria for selecting the tier-one list of official statistics, which are based primarily on the objectives of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi plan, the requirements of preparation of emirate’s sectoral plans and the figures/indicators needed to meet federal and international obligations.
The three specialised panels reviewed the list of the tier-one official statistics, and discussed the sub-categories therein, i.e. the economic statistics, social and demographic statistics, and agricultural and environmental statistics. The participants praised the meeting, emphasising its importance in the developing statistical work and meeting users’ expectations.
Furthermore, SCAD briefed its partners on the key new initiatives of relevance to the statistical system in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, such as the development of administrative records, the implementation of the quality assessment framework, the arrangements being made for coordination of statistical surveys, the programmes of the Centre’s Statistical Training Institute, etc.
