(8 April 2009)

The Millions’ Poet Festival of Poetry honouring all 48 poets and held at Al Raha Beach Theatre in Abu Dhabi will be broadcast this Thursday at 22:30 on Abu Dhabi TV. The night of poetry, music, dance and appreciation brought the poets, judges and organizers together with the audience for the last night of festivities before finally closing the door on the third season of the highest-rated show on Abu Dhabi TV, Millions’ Poet.

With flashbacks to the best and funniest clips of the season from the contestants poem to the guest artist and poets to the judges and presenters, the 48 poets went on stage one last time to pay tribute to everyone who encouraged them throughout their journey. In groups of 12 and 14, the poets each said two verses of gratitude ending with Sheikh Mohammed bin Mohammed bin Khaled Al Nahyan, an almost weekly guest of the show, and Mohamed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, giving out awards to honour every poet who participated in the TV competition.

The Festival of Poetry also saw several singers and groups perform to entertain the viewers. Emirati singer Elyasia, Saudi singer Abbas Ibrahim, the Saudi Dar Al Samr Group and the Emirati Al Sugor wa Al Majazeel Group all sang and danced traditional Gulf songs with the audience avidly joining in. Also honoured along with the poets were the Arab journalists who attended the show weekly and reported on the TV competition and others who were an integral part of the success of the show.

Over the course of the sixteen weeks, the contestants recited poems in subjects ranging from love, the nation, society, religion and politics to love, women, television shows and poetry. But for every one of the judges, there was a favourite and each of them had a say about who, in their opinion held promise as a Nabati poet. Sultan Al Amimi chose Emirati Khalifa Al Amri, an unknown poet who proved himself through his appearance on the show. Hamad Al Saeed chose Moushari Al Mirri from Kuwait for his ’superior poems’ while Dr. Ghassan Al Hassan chose Jordanian poet Haneen Al Aajarma for the pride she exhibited in her nation and her representation as a Jordanian woman and Jordanian poet. Judge Turki Al Mureikhi chose Abdullah Al Khalidi from Saudi Arabia for the excellence he showed as a poet and finally, Badr Sefoug chose poet Ali Al Saaban from Saudi Arabia for staying true to the basis of poetry.

Closing the Festival was the winner of season three of Millions’ Poet, Ziad Hajab bin Naheet who recited one last poem expressing his gratitude for everyone involved including His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Mohamed Khalaf Al Mazrouei and every person involved in the production of the competition. Along with presenters Hussein Al Amri, Laila Al Muqbali and Hadi Al Mansouri, Ziad brought season three of The Millions’ Poet to its final close.

The Millions’ Poet was launched by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage and is produced by Pyramedia.’Its aim has been to bring the region’s youth back to its roots by taking the traditions of the Bedouins from the Gulf into the 21st Century by bringing them to our screens. This year’s live competition saw 48 poets battle it out through various stages over 16 weeks to impress their audiences with their poetry and win the prestigious title of ’The Millions’ Poet’ and the five million Dirhams prize money.
