The Ministry of Environment and Water has begun its programme of activities developed for UAE Innovation Week, which is being celebrated under the directives of Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, from November 22 to 28, 2015 at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr Hotel in Abu Dhabi.
The Ministry kicked off the UAE Innovation Week, the first of its kind in the region, with a workshop on ‘Agricultural innovation and Sustainable Development.’ Engineer Saif Mohammed Al-Shara’, Assistant Under-Secretary for External Audit Sector at the Ministry of Environment and Water, emphasised the Ministry’s eagerness to promote sustainable agricultural development to ensure the preservation of natural resources. He said that the UAE places great importance on innovation in the field of sustainable agricultural development and across all environmental sectors noting that it plays a curial role in world-wide green efforts as well as the national objectives established by UAE Vision 2021.
The ‘Agricultural Innovation and Sustainable development’ workshop was organised in collaboration with the University of Arizona, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, The International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), ICBA, along with a number of local and international universities as well as notable international agricultural companies. The workshop is considered to be one of the most advanced agricultural development projects in the UAE, and features the active participation of internationals experts in the field of agriculture.
The workshop aims to shed light on the important role that agricultural innovations play in establishing a sustainable agrarian system and showcase the latest advancements in agricultural technology to farmers. The workshop also hopes to cultivate a stronger participation from the private sector and encourage companies to support agricultural innovations that are in line with efforts to preserve natural resources.
The event has been design to provide visitors with the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of specialists in the field and to strengthen the role of the Ministry’s Agricultural Innovation Center, which was inaugurated in 2014. Lastly, it will drive the development of the strategic plans to address the challenges facing agriculture by administering creative solutions.
