Professors at New York University Abu Dhabi co-author book that teaches students the Emirati dialect
The first ever modern standard textbook on Emirati dialect has been published by two professors from New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), giving a detailed insight into the UAE’s Arabic language.
The 352-page book titled Ramsah which translates into ‘talk’ in Emirati Arabic, was written by professors Nasser Isleem and Ayesha Al Hashemi, and is aimed at non-Arabic speaking students who are looking to learn Arabic, with the book explaining the linguistic style used by Emiratis.
The textbook, which also contains an audio guide, will feature the Arabic script alongside some translations in English, with a main focus on the structure, vocabulary, and pronunciation style behind the Emirati dialect.
“Arabic is the sixth most commonly spoken language in the world, and a strong knowledge of both written and spoken is in high demand. Ramsah is therefore designed to provide learners with the tools they need to learn the Emirati dialect used in the UAE and the surrounding region,” said Professor Nasser Isleem, who works as a Language Immersion Specialist for Arabic Studies at NYUAD.
“By providing learners with a rich cultural and linguistic approach through real-life situations, along with the audio materials that accompany the textbook, we hope it will make Emirati Arabic easier to learn as a living language for everyday use,” he added.
Prof Ayesha, who teaches the same subject, said the book was not limited to university students alone but could be a good source for anyone interested in learning about Emirati linguistics.
“With Ramsah, my hope is that language students as well as interested visitors and residents, not only at NYUAD, will now have a new resource to use in their language and culture learning experiences, be it in an academic setting, as part of their cultural or professional development, or individually.”
