A UAE paper has said that for the past 10 days, the UAE proved to the world that during a crisis its people stand tall, unshaken and most significantly as members of one family.
"The tragic news of the death of 52 of our brave soldiers on the battlefield in Yemen was unprecedented in the history of this country. But that only added to the national sense of solidarity," said Gulf News in an editorial on Tuesday.
It is said that times of crises help define the true national identity of a nation. But the UAE has always been a nation with a strong sense of solidarity and that was showcased to the world during the past 10 days, especially the uniquely close relationship between the people and the rulers. The projection of the unique relationship that ties the people and the leadership was actually a highlight of the story of the martyrdom of the 52 heroes.
There is an overwhelming support to the Yemen mission. The people know that our brave servicemen died fighting for justice. The entire nation stands firmly behind our armed forces as they defend the right of the Yemeni people to live free of the tyranny of the Al Houthi militia and its allies.
But what stood out during the past 10 days are the amazing images of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and other officials visiting each and every family of the martyrs in their houses; and visiting the wounded servicemen in hospitals. These exceptional scenes were basically lessons for us all. They show not only real leadership, but also the special characteristics of this unique country and the intimate relationship between the people and their leadership.
"We cannot imagine any other country where the leaders spend so much time and effort to comfort families which lost their dear ones. Such leadership, walking the path charted by the late Sheikh Zayed and the founders of the nation, is what makes the UAE an oasis of stability and progress in a turbulent region," concluded the Dubai-based daily.
