More than 200 taxi drivers in Abu Dhabi lined up at Le Royal Meridian to enjoy special iftar boxes that included biryani, dates, juice and fresh fruits.
The Hotel took the initiative during Ramadan to show a token of appreciation from the community.
Bangladeshi driver Jasim Waseem, 26, was happy to have food in his cab in case he had a passenger during iftar. He said: “If we have passengers, especially those who need to go outside the city to far off areas, we cannot stop in the middle to break our fast during the Azan”.
Indian Driver, Mohammed Farooq, 40, was looking forward to enjoying a meal instead of the standard quick bite. “Usually, I keep dates in the car to break my fast with and can stop for not more than five minutes to pray and maybe grab a quick snack”, said Farooq.
“This box looks like there have a variety of things inside, which I do not get a chance to enjoy on a daily basis”, he added.
For Pakistani driver, Abdul Wahid, 34, the most exciting part of the iftar was the biryani, he said: “When we are back home in Pakistan we have the luxury of breaking our fast with a variety of dishes, my favourite being Biryani.
“Over here, we cannot do that and after a very long time, I will break my fast with a Biryani, which reminds me of home”, he added.
Taxi drivers who received the boxes, left the entrance of the hotel with a smile, as the staff and volunteers of Le Royal Meridian greeted and wished them Ramadan Kareem.
Volunteer Lucica Suciu, 30, Sales Executive at Le Royal Meridian said: “This feels amazing because it is a chance for us to give back to these people who take us around the city every day.
“They have quite a hard life so this is to make them feel valued and to say a big thank you from our side”, she added.
