A UAE paper has said that it was a proud moment for the crew of Azzam, the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, who have returned home to a winner’s reception after claiming the Volvo Ocean Race title and the accompanying in-port regatta series.
"This double victory is proof that the UAE can compete globally in the world of sport," said The National in an editorial on Tuesday.
As the paper reports today, the crew is in the country to present the trophy to Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority. Azzam’s victory was not easy, nor was it lucky. Preparation and planning were paramount. Tough calculations were also made during each of the nine legs of the race – based on weather conditions at each stopover, the condition of the boat and competitors. Enormous credit should go to skipper Ian Walker, his crew and support staff.
"When Azzam claimed top spot, Adil Khalid also became the first person from this region to win the 62,764-kilometre ocean marathon. His was not just a personal achievement, it is a victory that has made the entire nation proud." concluded the Abu Dhabi-based daily.
