Abu Dhabi Farmers’ Services Centre has opened a livestock market for the sale of local animals next to the central slaughterhouse in Bani Yas.
The market will be open until the last day of Ramadan and gives ADFSC members and livestock breeders the opportunity to sell their sheep and goats directly to customers. Camels will also be on sale directly to the public from the Emirates Future Company. The market is open from 7a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, until the end of the Holy Month.
Abu Dhabi Farmers’ Services Centre has provided livestock yards for its members and livestock breeders for a symbolic fee. A single barn can accommodate approximately 50 heads of cattle or 10 heads of baby camels.
"Our aim is to support livestock breeders in the emirate and give them the opportunity to sell their products to customers directly, especially on occasions when demand for meat increases such as Ramadan and Eid Al Adha" said Ahmed Al Suwaidi, ADFSC Communications Section Manager.
The livestock market concept proved a success when it first launched at the Al Dhafrah Festival in the Western Region four years ago. ADFSC has worked to repeat the experience during Eid Al Adha as it provides a viable sales outlet without the need for mediators and brokers. Buyer and seller complete sales with no commissions paid to ADFSC.
This business model generates greater incomes for local farmers as they can market their livestock directly to the customer, who in return receives market quality produce and prices.
"ADFSC’s role is to strengthen the position of local produce and confirm its competitiveness in the market in support of food security. Local meat products enjoy a high acceptance by consumers and represent a source of pride for Emiratis," continued Al Suwaidi.
The ADFSC livestock market in Bani Yas follows strict safety and animal welfare requirements, giving the public peace of mind when buying their animals. The market is located next to the central slaughterhouse saving consumers time when purchasing meat over the busy Ramadan period.
