Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and Chairman of the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology Board of Trustees, Masdar Institute will be organizing the fifth commencement ceremony for the Class of 2015.
His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, will give the keynote address at the ceremony that will be held on 26 May at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. More than 100 students from 36 countries including the UAE, are expected to receive their Master’s degrees across nine academic programs. Masdar Institute will also be celebrating the commencement of its first PhD graduates in Interdisciplinary Engineering at the ceremony.
Dr. Fred Moavenzadeh, President, Masdar Institute, said, “The Masdar Institute Class of 2015, a group of well-educated leaders, will receive their degrees during what has been declared the Year of Innovation - an appropriate time for these young innovators to enter the market.”
“As our fifth graduating class, these researchers represent the successful execution of the Masdar Institute mission - to deliver critical thinkers in advanced energy and sustainability, and to be a driving force of the country’s innovation ecosystem,” he added.
Graduating students have already made their mark on the UAE’s sustainability ecosystem through their research and innovation in breakthrough technologies in the clean energy and advanced technology arenas. Students worked with government and industry partners who have signed collaboration agreements with Masdar Institute. This year, Masdar Institute has doubled its US-registered patents to six, with 54 pending patent applications and nearly 100 invention disclosures.
In line with the objectives of the UAE National Innovation Strategy, Masdar Institute has been inspiring innovation and entrepreneurship in all sectors especially renewable energy, technology, water, health, space, and transportation. Masdar Institute’s four Institute Research Centers (iCenters) driven the development of novel research technologies across the relevant sectors of the UAE.
Dignitaries, VIPs, ministers, government officials, and CEOs of private and government sector organizations are expected to attend the graduation ceremony. In addition, the event will be attended by board members and stakeholders of Masdar Institute and Masdar, representatives from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as well as families and friends of graduating students.
The graduation ceremony will celebrate the achievements of the students, while placing Masdar Institute firmly among global institutions that are dedicated to the development of intellectual and human capital in advanced energy and sustainable technologies.
The ceremony represents a new milestone for Masdar Institute, which has recorded consistent achievements in research and innovation. The fifth group of graduating students also reflects the diversity of emerging talent in clean energy and sustainability that the research-based institution has successfully created. These new graduates are expected to emulate the professional successes of their predecessors to further establish Masdar Institute as an innovation engine through its highly-skilled engineering graduates.
Masdar Institute currently has more than 300 alumni. Nearly 96% of the Class of 2014 are either employed or pursuing PhD programs locally and internationally. As of September 2014, the total number of enrolled students was 491, including 148 PhD students.
