Abu Dhabi Ports Sees 35% Growth In Q1 2015
(13 May 2015)

The terminal operator handled 302,151 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEU) in Q1 2015, a 35% increase compared to the same period of the previous year.

The rise has been driven, in part, by increased numbers of new shipping lines calling at the port, as well additional connections, according to the company.

“Last year, our general and bulk cargo increased by 37% over the entire year,” said Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamsi, chief executive officer of Abu Dhabi Ports.

“This trend looks set to continue, looking at our latest figures, as containers, general, and bulk cargo have all increased by more than 30% to date. This healthy growth is the result of increased import/export activity around various industrial development projects in the Emirate, and work resuming on some of the [UAE’s] major infrastructure projects,” he added.

Abu Dhabi Ports has handled a total of 3,519,714 freight tonnes (FT) of general and bulk cargo in the first quarter of 2015, compared to 2,663,129 FT during the same period last year.

“This is a great start to the year, and we will be working hard with our customers to support this trade growth,” Al Shamsi noted.
