145 Certified Volunteers At The Department Of Community Police
(9 May 2015)

According to Colonel Mubarak Bin Muhairom, General Director of the Community Protection and Crime Prevention at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, the number of accredited volunteers at the Department of Community Police at the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ has increased to 145 volunteers during the first quarter of the year.

Colonel Bin Muhairom attributed the increase in the number of those wishing to volunteer and join the different events organized by Abu Dhabi Police, to the significant role undertaken by the community police; as well as the volunteers’ instrumental role in community-based police work. He confirmed that the volunteers’ selection process is based on quality and on precise standards, in a bid to allow volunteers to perform their duties and roles with efficiency and excellence.

Adding further, he said: “We will be expanding our efforts to create a significant volunteer engagement network related to community police tasks at the countrywide level. To this end, we will further activate the role of the different volunteering branches in spreading and building the culture of giving and the creative engagement standards, which will ultimately promote the values of belonging to the UAE.”

Moreover, Colonel Bin Muhairom noted that the Community Police Department is currently planning to increase the number of courses for volunteers related to areas and tasks of the community police. The courses will focus on reinforcing the practical capabilities, in a bid to acquaint volunteers with the means to deal with incidents; to overcome their fear of large crowds; and the proper techniques for dealing with big crowds, based on gender, age, and level of culture.

For his part, First Lieutenant Mubarak Hadef Al Khaili, Volunteers Branch Manager at the Department of Community Police, noted that the department has signed several agreements aimed at spreading the concepts of volunteering, out of its firm belief in the crucial role that volunteering plays in society. He noted that a total of 29 female students from the Higher Colleges of Technology are currently involved in a 16-hour student volunteer program within a curricular practical course.

Adding further, he pointed out that the number of volunteers amounted to 28 in 2013,  who spent 398 hours of volunteer work in 49 different activities. This number has significantly increased in 2014 to approximately 113 volunteers, with 1913 hours in 49 activities.

In conclusion, he pointed out that the Department of Community Police has established a set of standards for volunteering, the most important being the skills that volunteers need in order to be able to donate their expertise as needed in the tasks that are entrusted to them. He noted that volunteers must be well informed of the police’s tasks and their community-based role, and must willing to engage in volunteer work.
