(20 April 2015)

On Sunday, the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police took part in a forum for the 40th Arab Deaf Week which was held at the Dalma Mall in Abu Dhabi. The forum, which was organized by the Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs, is in line with the traffic awareness programs that aim to enhance communication with the segment of society that consists of persons with special needs.

Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of the Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, Abu Dhabi Police; stressed the importance of communication with this important segment which falls within the ‘Plants of Hope’ initiative. The initiative was launched by Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, as one of the humanitarian initiatives for children with special needs in a bid to raise their awareness regarding traffic guidelines in order to protect them against traffic-related accidents.

He pointed out that the annual forum for students with hearing disabilities has been organized within the 40th Arab Deaf Week, and included traffic information and competitions.  The traffic awareness performances were all translated with sign language. By contributing to the development of traffic knowledge for students with hearing disabilities, the activities of the Arab Deaf Week provide deaf persons with the safety and means to protect themselves from traffic accidents while additionally enabling them to become more integrated within the community.

Colonel Al Ameri praised the participation of the segment of society that consists of persons with special needs and their role in supporting the efforts of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police. The directorate is committed to conducting various awareness activities that aim to enhance the level of traffic culture throughout the community.

He concluded by urging every driver to pay attention to this important segment, to reduce their  speeds, to give priority to persons with disabilities by allowing them to cross the street first, and to leave the designated parking spots for disabled persons open and available for those who need them. He pointed out that illegally parking in the designated parking spots for disabled persons will result in an infraction punishable by a fine of 1,000 Dhs and four black points.
