Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, attended a lecture by Professor Jochen Runde from the University of Cambridge, under the theme “Emotional Intelligence and Effective Leadership”. The lecture that was organized by the Creativity and Leadership Development Center for officers and police leaders was held at the Decision-Making Support Center’s auditorium at the Police Departments Complex in Abu Dhabi and the Police Science Academy, at the University City – Sharjah, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge.

The lecture embodies the keenness of the police leadership to boost the competency of leaders at the Ministry of Interior, in a bid to achieve its vision of making the UAE one of the safest and most secure countries in the world. It also aims to highlight the importance for great leaders to have an affective and emotional side, in order to develop a harmonious leader-subordinate relationship, which is significantly related to the excellence achieved by institutions and organizations.

The lecturer tackled the various definitions of effective leadership, as well as the role of the leader in engaging and motivating employees to achieve the vision of the institution; and the methods and patterns of effective leadership. Moreover, he stressed the need to choose a particular leadership pattern that is commensurate with each organization and its culture, as well the skills needed for effective leadership.

Moreover, the lecturer gave a definition of emotional intelligence, saying that is a combination of cognitive, emotional and personal abilities, and differs from rational intelligence. He also explained the fundamental dimensions of emotional intelligence, namely self-awareness; self-regulation; motivation; empathy; and social skill. Professor Runde also discussed the practical ways to develop emotional intelligence and the practical steps to improve emotional intelligence of individuals and leaders within organizations.

Towards the end of the lecture, Professor Jochen Runde answered the questions and queries of the audience.
