Abu Dhabi Traffic Urges Drivers To Reduce Speed In Dusty Conditions
(2 April 2015)

A 24-year-old Emirati woman was seriously injured in a traffic accident Thursday morning on the Dubai-Al Ain road in the Al Faqa’ area.  The accident was due to the inclement weather, high winds, and dust-storms that have affected the country since the first hours of the day and causing low visibility.

The woman was transferred by air ambulance to the nearest hospital for treatment.

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police called upon drivers to be cautious, especially that the visibility was almost non-existent on internal and external roads within the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The Directorate also urged motorists to increase their attention while driving especially on the roads that connect to Abu Dhabi in the regions of Al Sila, Dubai, and Al Ain due to the wind carrying dust and sand.

Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of the Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, advised motorists to drive their vehicles at an appropriate speed that avoids accidents; to leave a sufficient distance between vehicles while driving; to stop their vehicle on the right side of the road if visibility is too low due to the dust; and for their safety, not to park or stop under trees, near billboards, or around construction sites.

Moreover, he urged drivers to abide by traffic rules and regulations and to abide by the right directives of the leadership in such weather conditions, especially on roads in the desert areas that have no windbreaks; where sand tends to accumulate on the streets making it difficult to avoid when driving at high speeds.

“It is essential that drivers are vigilant and pay attention, one of the causes leading to accidents during sandstorms is when sand accumulates on the surface of the roads,” Colonel Al Ameri said. He continued to advise motorists to “observe the traffic rules and regulations; take the necessary precautions in cases of dusty weather; and be mindful of any obstructions in the road such as remnants from building materials, tree trunks, or palm fronds.”

Furthermore, Colonel Al Ameri reiterated his call to the public to abide by traffic regulations and urged them to use the hazard lights when the vehicles have come to a complete stop when coming across any emergency; and in the event of low visibility, turn on the vehicle’s lights during the day in order clearly make the vehicle identifiable to other motorists.

Concluding, he stressed the need to abide by all precautionary measures that include abstaining from parking next to buildings under construction; to ensure that vehicles are covered by insurance especially in regions with different terrains in the highlands or wetlands; and to watch for solid objects on external roads such as palm fronds, tree trunks, and construction waste such as materials made of plastic or tin.
