Pink Caravan Arrives In Abu Dhabi And Offers Free Examinations To 4514 People In Eight Days
(24 March 2015)

The annual Pink Caravan Ride, a pan-UAE breast cancer awareness initiative by the Friends of Cancer Patients charity (FoCP) is continuing its tour today in Abu Dhabi.

The ride will wrap up its tour today (Wednesday) in Abu Dhabi where it will start its journey from Sheikh Zayed Mosque in the morning, riding through Abu Dhabi streets, and will finish at Galleria, after traveling 21.3km on its final day.

The nation-wide horseback trek, which arrived in Abu Dhabi yesterday toured all the emirates and offered free breast cancer screenings to thousands of Emiratis and expatriates, both men and women, and contributed to dispelling misconceptions related to the disease.

The ten well-trained riders, dressed in pink, started their tour of Abu Dhabi from the Corniche Park and stopped at Zayed Military Hospital later that day after travelling 30.5km. The riders stopped several times on their way to interact with the audience to highlight the importance of the Pink Caravan initiative and its humanitarian mission in the fight against breast cancer and reducing its prevalence.

One rider had made a special effort to participate in the awareness drive and travelled all the way from Germany to do so. Pauline Dagmar said, “Three years ago I saw an announcement about the Pink Caravan Ride and wanted join the ride. For myself I think it’s very important for every woman to have awareness of the disease of breast cancer. That’s why I was very happy to see the effort this charity makes. I wasn’t sure I could do this because I am not a professional horseback rider. Here in the emirates the horseback riders are very good and professional so I wasn’t sure I could do it, but I am very glad I did.”

Pink Caravan's medical and nursing staff offered free screenings at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Company in Abu Dhabi, Dubai Customs and the Emirates Identity Authority in Ajman. According to the Medical Committee, on the 8th day the Pink Caravan's medical staff offered breast cancer screenings to 542 people, including 411 women and 131 men in Shaikh Khalifa Hospital, Al Manama Healthcare Clinic, and Muzaire Healthcare Centre in Ajman, bringing the total number of people examined to 4513, including 1123 men and 3376 women, close to achieving its goal of offering examinations to 5,000 people by the end of the tour.

On its last day mobile clinics will be available at Abu Dhabi Police Clinics, Abu Dhabi Emiratistion Council, Al Ain University of Science and Technology where free breast cancer early detection screenings and examinations will be offered to everyone.

Coinciding with Mother's Day, the Pink Caravan organized an event called "Mommy & Me", in collaboration with the Women Sport Department at Sharjah Ladies Club and Children's Centres in Sharjah, at Al Majaz Waterfront.

The four-hour event aimed to raise mothers' awareness about the role of healthy living in reducing breast cancer incidence and offered free mammogram screenings to hundreds of mothers and their daughters of various nationalities.
