DOT Completes The Implementation Of The Traffic Counting Project In Abu Dhabi
(4 March 2015)

The Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi announced that its Traffic Management and Technology, TMT, Division at the Traffic Management Center has completed the implementation of the Traffic Counting System project in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The project is one of the DOT's important strategies which has deployed more than 190 advanced traffic count stations across all main roads in the cities of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and the Western Region (Al Gharbia).

At a cost of more than AED 9 million, the project, which provides raw traffic data such as the average vehicles' volume, size, speed and classification, in addition to creating a central traffic database for the whole Emirate, was completed. The collected data contributes to realising the emirate's strategy for Intelligent Transport Systems, ITS.

It also provides the necessary information for the DoT that helps in the design, planning and management of main roads according to the best international standards and in line with Abu Dhabi vision 2030 and the Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP). Eventually, this will lead to the establishment of an integrated and sustainable infrastructure for the transport network.

The Department of Transport's objective is to ensure the application of the minimum operating and maintenance requirements, in addition to evaluating the level of service provided to road users through acquiring precise and clear information on roads and vehicles use, and the most used and crowded routes.

This data was collected to be studied and analysed by transport specialists to help the DoT in counting commuting time and managing traffic and accidents. The TCS calculates safety and performance indicators on the main roads for a better transport asset management. It also offers the DoT the raw data to enrich studies and analysis of traffic patterns at peak times in order to take the necessary decisions and actions accordingly.

The importance of the Traffic Counting System lies in its ability to collect the data from various sites using cutting-edge radar stations that can detect and measure the traffic on the roads in all weather conditions.

TCS can directly link the data to the central control unit at DoT's Traffic Management Centre to generate specialised traffic reports on several levels. This enables the Department of Transport to design strategic plans for the development of infrastructure and road networks in the emirate and for strategic partners such as Abu Dhabi Police, Municipalities of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Western Region, and other government entities as well as private sector developers and consultancy companies.

Furthermore, the system contributes to reducing energy consumption costs as it relies completely on solar energy in operating the traffic counting stations, while using wireless connection to transfer data from the sites and linking them to the control room in the Traffic Management Center. These stations are also designed in an innovative way to work in the long term since their installation does not require road closures, and this facilitates the operation and maintenance without affecting the traffic flow. Additionally, there are a number of mobile traffic counting stations that enable traffic engineers to obtain the necessary traffic data easily from any location that is not covered by fixed stations.
