The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Goethe-Institut, Gulf Region, are to bring the Tabadoul Orchestra from Germany to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah, this month to present music of the renowned Egyptian composer, Mohamed Abdel Wahab.
Having composed more than 1,000 pieces, Mohamed Abdel Wahab stands out as one of the most significant and innovative composers of the Arab World. He is recognised as the inventor of the Arabic film-musical who created a genuine style by using Western instruments such as electric guitars and pianos and by fusing Latin-American dance rhythms like Rumba or ChaCha.
"The Wahab-Project is more than a mere mixture of German and Arab music. Composer Mohamed Abdel Wahab included diverse European styles in general and German elements in particular into his actually Arabian compositions. That made this music so unique," explained Dr. Gabriele Landwehr, General Director of the Goethe-Institut, Gulf Region, in Abu Dhabi.
"All of a sudden a Polka or a Tango sound completely different when they are imbedded in the spirit and the traditional background of Arabic music. And due to the modern instrumentation a mix of bellydance-rhythms, jazz, rock and folk is created which is both classic and modern at the same time." Dr. Eckhard Lubkemeier, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the UAE, said, "In times of intense conflicts and divisions, Wahab's basic idea has become even more important. Mixing the music styles of the whole world, Oriental, European, American, Asian and African without missing out on your own background." Mohamed Wabah's music is almost unknown in Europe. A special touch is added to Tabadoul's concert as Mohamed Abdel Wahab is the composer of the United Arab Emirates national anthem and many of the anthems of other Arab states.
The concerts are jointly presented by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Goethe-Institut, Gulf Region, the Fujairah Culture and Media Authority, the Emirates Heritage Club Abu Dhabi and the Madinat Theatre.
The orchestra was founded in 2010 by musicians from Cologne, Egypt and Turkey after some of them had toured the Arab World and were impressed by its musical heritage. Since 2013, Tabadoul has performed with charismatic Lebanese singer Rabih Lahoud who will enrich the concerts in the UAE together with Lebanese singer Sandy Chamoun.
