Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), the entity responsible for developing quality infrastructure and raising awareness on quality standards in Abu Dhabi, today hosted a conference titled ‘Abu Dhabi: Defining Standards’.
Convened on the sidelines of the 29th ISO/IEC JTC 1 Plenary Meeting at the Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, the conference focused on the implementation of international IT standards towards establishing a competitive economy in Abu Dhabi.
More specifically, the event aimed to answer key questions on how standards can help Abu Dhabi and the UAE consolidate their leading position in the IT landscape to better connect with the public, how the application of IT standards can improve the urban experience for residents of Abu Dhabi and other cities, how IT standards can aid citizens and governments in improving cyber-safety, and how Abu Dhabi can leverage IT trends to achieve the ambitious targets of the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030.
Samer Karawi, Managing Partner, G&K Consulting, moderated a plenary session titled ‘Industry, Infrastructure and E-Government: Abu Dhabi, A Global Leader in E-enabled Government Services’, while Salem Al-Qassimi, Director of Product Conformity at the QCC, directed the second plenary session on ‘Smarter Solutions, Smarter Cities, Smarter Living: How can IT Standards make Cities a Better Place to Live?’.
The conference also hosted two workshops: ‘Now Trending: the Future of IT - 2015 and Beyond’, and ‘Sustainability for and by Information Technology’.
Abdullah Hassan Al Muaini, Executive Director of Conformity Scheme Services at QCC said: “We are proud to host this high-level conference that is certain to generate significant discussion and insight on the need to develop a highly efficient economy supported by clearly defined standards. High performance governments ought to be supported by sound standards and the wider engagement of various stakeholders. We have invited key regional and international experts to leverage the platform to improve cooperation and share best practices and insights with local organizations.”
The 29th plenary meeting of the Joint Technical Committee for the International Organization for Standardization/International Electro-technical Commission (ISO/IEC JTC 1) is jointly organized by the Emirates Authority for Standardization & Metrology (ESMA) and the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC). Running from November 15 to 20, the meeting has been convened to review the committee’s activities and accomplishments to date, and discuss future plans on the worldwide business and consumer applications of ICT standards and systems.
The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council was established in 2009 to raise the quality of Abu Dhabi’s exports and products traded locally, while protecting the interests of the emirate’s consumers and supporting its competitive economy. The organization’s goals are achieved through enabling regulators to establish and implement product safety, legal metrology and conformity schemes. QCC also sets guidelines and benchmarks to identify and verify that the products manufactured and traded in the emirate conform to the highest quality standards.
