Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, reviewed the ISO:15189 certification for Biological Samples on Thursday. The Forensic Evidence Department at the Abu Dhabi Police obtained the certification from the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA). According to the A2LA website, the Forensic Evidence Department is the first police entity to obtain this certification worldwide.

Colonel Abdul Rahman Al Hammadi, Head of the Forensic Evidence Department, officially presented HH Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed with the certificate at the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters (GHQ). His Highness Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed praised the international achievement and urged the team at the Forensic Evidence Department to pursue further efforts and dedication in order to achieve excellence and innovation.

The ISO:15189 certification in biological samples is one of the international certifications for referencing medical laboratories management systems of criminal cases in tests for alcohol, volatile substances, proof of paternity and kinship, identification of scientific standards for packaging, and the proper means of handling samples before sending them to the laboratory in order to prevent damage or loss.

The ceremony was attended by Major General Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior; Brigadier Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, Director General of the Headquarters Affairs at Abu Dhabi Police; Colonel Mohammed Hamid bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, Strategy and Performance Development Director General at the Ministry of Interior; and Colonel Faisal Sultan Al Shuaibi, Director of Strategy and Performance Development at Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters.

It is noteworthy that this certificate is one of the basic requirements of the strategic initiative for the electronic FEDLIMS System project for information management at the Forensic Evidence Department. This project is part of the strategic initiative aimed to improve the capabilities of forensic laboratories so as to be able to respond effectively to the demands of the criminal work through the application of the “information and resources management system”- making it the first of its kind in the region.
