Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), managed by Cleveland Clinic, hosted a Thyroid Ultrasound Workshop in collaboration with the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists – Gulf Chapter (AACE-GC).
With the increasing clinical disorders of the thyroid gland, thyroid ultrasound has proven to be a fundamental imaging tool that can be made available within the reach of every Endocrinologist. Unfortunately, the number of experts and trainees in the area of thyroid ultrasound remains limited in the Gulf area, according to the organisers.
The one-day course, which took place recently at SKMC’s Diabetes and Endocrinology Centre, was designed for endocrinologists – physicians who diagnose diseases related to glands – and was divided into a theoretical introduction that included thyroid ultrasound Physics and Anatomy, and a focus on the use of ultrasound equipment and ultrasound-guided biopsy skills. The organising committee, led by Dr. Huda Mustafa, Consultant Endocrinologist, SKMC, brought together local and international experts to develop the workshop.
“The workshop is a unique learning opportunity that is not available in most other Thyroid workshops as it involves real patients with various thyroid structural pathologies,” said Dr. Mustafa, who is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology and a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of the UK. “The program is well organized and is covered by eminent national and international experts in the field. This is the first time a Thyroid Ultrasound Workshop has ever been conducted in the Gulf region which gives us the pride and privilege to have Sheikh Khalifa Medical City host this event.”
“It is noteworthy that we have conducted a workshop of this level with such an international authority as the AACE. Such events are important as we look to develop our knowledge and treatment of these serious conditions,” said Dr Abdulmajeed Al Zubaidi, Chief Medical Officer at SKMC, and certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
“It is the intention of the AACE chapter to pursue this educational task on a regular basis in the future and develop it further towards a professional certification. We look forward to continuing this collaboration.”
SKMC is part of the SEHA HealthSystem and owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), which is responsible for the activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
