Experts from Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), managed by Cleveland Clinic, are tackling the worries of modern life, as part of their on-going series of mental health awareness talks.
The lecture will take place on 4 November at 7:30 pm in the Behavioural Sciences Pavilion (BSP) auditorium at SKMC, and is aimed at understanding how society looks at psychological health, conscience, and the stigma of mental illness.
Dr. Mufeed Raoof, BSP Specialist Physician and International Associate of the Royal College of Psychiatrists will lead the talk and help explain how our fast-moving modern society could negatively influence mental health, especially in terms of worrying about everyday life.
“As per the World Health Organisation, health is a state of wholesome that reflects physical, mental, and social wellbeing and is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Urban life influences mental health through stress and confusion, family issues, loss of psychological security and a lack of confidence in the future,” Dr. Raoof, who is also Secretary General of the Emirates Psychiatric Society, said.
“However, we can easily maintain good mental health through building self-confidence, fostering positive family relationships, developing a healthy lifestyle and ensuring peace with one’s own self. We, ourselves, can influence all the elements of mental health and achieve a balance across physical, psychological, social, economic and spiritual levels,” he added.
This health talk is part of the Mental Health Awareness Program that started in March 2010, and includes a series of health talks in Arabic language every month on different topics related to mental health and social problems.
SKMC is part of the SEHA Health System and is owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The Mental Health Awareness Program is organized by the BSP of SKMC, a comprehensive psychiatric facility committed to providing mental health treatment services in the UAE. The program consists of monthly public health talks about different topics related to mental health in the Arabic language. The talks are given by a panel of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists as well as social workers from the BSP. Each session includes a question and answer session to answer the attendees’ inquiries.
