And we are honoured to announce that the UAE is the Gold Sponsor of the anniversary celebrations. The results of the elections are a testament on the UAE’s prestigious stature among countries of the world and the confidence given to our country while sponsoring the 150th anniversary celebrations next year. They also reflect our confidence in the future role of the Union, particularly in light of the tremendous developments in knowledge economy and society, governments and smart cities,” commented H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim after the meetings.
ITU was founded in Paris in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union. It took its present name in 1932, and in 1947 became a specialized agency of the United Nations. Although its first area of expertise was the telegraph, the work of ITU now covers the whole ICT sector, from digital broadcasting to the Internet, and from mobile technologies to 3D TV.
An organization based on public-private partnership since its inception, ITU currently has a membership of 193 countries and over 700 private-sector entities and academic institutions. ITU is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has twelve regional and area offices around the world.
Founded on the principle of international cooperation between governments (Member States) and the private sector (Sector Members, Associates and Academia), ITU is the premier global forum through which parties work towards consensus on a wide range of issues affecting the future direction of the ICT industry.
