H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General of TRA, and head of the UAE delegation at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2014, delivered a speech on behalf of the participating Arab League. H.E. congratulated Mr. Malcolm Johnson of United Kingdom, for occupying the Deputy Secretary-General position in the ITU, and expressed the UAE’s willingness to work with him in order to achieve the objectives of the Union in deployment of ICT technologies for continuous worldwide sustainable development.
At the request of the ITU PP14 President, it was decided that one state would express congratulations on behalf of each regional group. The UAE was selected to speak on behalf of the Arab League participating in the conference, as the nation was appointed Chairman of the Arab League PP14 task force.
H.E. Al Ghanim said: “On behalf of the Arab League, I would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Mr. Malcolm Johnson on his election as the Deputy Secretary-General of the ITU. The Arab League expresses thanks and appreciation to Mr. Malcolm for his contributions and effective efforts during his tenure as Director of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau. We, in the Arab League, believe in Mr. Malcolm’s ability to contribute significantly to promoting the development of the ITU, side-by-side with elected Secretary-General Mr. Zhao, as well as elected bureau directors.”
Mr. Malcolm was elected for this position after four rounds, which witnessed a high degree of competition between the five candidates in the first and second round. This resulted in shortlisting the competition in the third round among three candidates. However, in the final round Mr. Malcolm Johnson received 104 votes while his competitor Shola Taylor of Nigeria received 64 votes.
The newly elected Deputy Secretary-General extended his appreciation in an official speech to all participating delegations. Mr. Malcolm also stressed that the ITU will continue working on the development of the telecommunications sector worldwide, through the adoption of strategic plans and ambitious policies that meet the needs of the world's population in various regions and continents. The session also witnessed elections for director positions in ITU’s three bureaus; Radiocommunication, Telecommunication Standardization, and Telecommunication Development.
