The rising incidence of obesity in UAE is very well documented; however, there is also a significant increase in weight loss as well. Aesthetic surgeons at the Cocoona Centre for Aesthetic Transformation & Day Surgery are now performing body lift surgeries on 60% of their patients who have experienced dramatic weight loss. Other popular aesthetic surgeries in the UAE are liposuction & body sculpting, breast enhancements, and rhinoplasty. There is also a growing demand for more diversified procedures such as hair transplantations, face lifts, and eyelid surgeries.
Dr Sanjay Parashar, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Cocoona Centre for Aesthetic Transformation & Day Surgery, spoke today at the Surgery Conference at the Arab Health Recruitment & Training Fair. The event, which is the largest healthcare recruitment and career development fair in the region, concludes today (20 October) at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
“We are aware of the rising incidence of obesity in UAE, but there is also a significant increase in weight loss as well. I have seen about 250 patients in last five years who have undergone massive weight loss (at least 100 pounds or more than 50% of their body weight), and around 45% have lost the weight by simply altering their lifestyle, exercising and watching their diet. Obesity not only poses immediate health risks but also distorts the body and leaves behind excess skin folds in the body,” highlighted Dr Parashar.
Prior to considering aesthetic surgeries patients must weigh up the pros and cons relative to their health. Common problems resulting from procedures are bleeding, hematoma, delay in wound healing problems and scarring.
According to Dr Parashar, “When considering aesthetic surgery, first of all, you need to ensure you are seeking a professional and qualified help with surgeons who are fully qualified and have more than 10 years of experience. Secondly, there needs to be an open and clear discussion on whether or not their expectations can be met, and that they're suitable candidates and are medically fit to undergo the procedure. They need to ensure that there is a follow up system with the surgeon’s team in place.”
Complications from surgeries can be avoided and minimized by ensuring that the patients are not smoking, or taking lot of medications that can thin the blood, and that they are thoroughly evaluated by the surgeon. It is also important to follow the surgeon’s advice on follow up care. One of the challenges surgeons face is that are many people are in ignorant of their health issues or negligent about smoking, which can dramatically affect their surgical outcome.
