HE Obaid Humaid Al Tayer, Minister of State for Financial Affairs will head the UAE’s delegation at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG), which will be held at the Bank’s headquarters in Washington DC, from October 10 to 12. The meetings will be attended by ministers of finance, central bankers and senior officials from the private and financial sector, as well as academics.
The UAE’s participating delegation will include HE Mubarak Rashid Al Mansouri, UAE Central Bank Governor; HE Younis Haji Al Khouri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance (MoF); HE Khalid Ali Al Bustani, Assistant Undersecretary of International Financial Relations Sector at MoF; in addition to a number of specialists from MoF.
During the WGB and the IMF meetings, participants will discuss projects and ideas of global concern in order to support countries in strengthening their global economic outlook, economic development, poverty eradication and aid effectiveness. Alongside these meetings, a number of seminars will be held in addition to regional media briefings, press conferences and a range of activities which will focus on the global economy, international development and the global financial system.
The World Bank Group and IMF’s annual meetings are scheduled to start on October 10, when each chairman of the Board of Governors and the Director Generals of the IMF and WBG will deliver a speech about their institutions. The agenda for the second day includes the meeting of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) and the joint World Bank- IMF Development Committee. During this meeting, the IMFC will provide advice and reports to the IMF’s Board of Governors and discussions will be held about global economic development and prospects, financial market developments as well as issues concerning the Fund.
During the IMFC’s meetings, HE Obaid Humaid Al Tayer will head the Arab Group, which is considered the most important committee in the IMF. HE will also head the Arab Groups of Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Egypt, Qatar, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Syria and the Maldives.
HE will also participate in the joint World Bank-IMF Development Committee’s meeting which will cover supporting global economic growth as well as the WBG’s plans to encourage economic development and the eradication of poverty in developing countries. The IMFC and development committee will issue a set of recommendations to the Board of Governors by the end of their meetings.
During his participation in the annual meetings, HE will meet Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the IMF and Dr Jim Yong Kim, President of WBG, along with the Executive Directors of the Arab Group at the IMF and the WGB, and the finance ministers participating in these meetings.
MoF, in coordination with the UAE Embassy in Washington, will organise a reception for UAE banks in collaboration with the UAE Central Bank and the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), with the sponsorship of 10 UAE banks and financial institutions. The Ministry’s aim behind organising the reception is to promote these banks and highlight their role in the process of economic development.
