(3 August 2014)

Of the 17 traffic accidents on the roads and highways inside and outside of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, five people were killed and six others were seriously injured. These numbers were recorded during the Eid Al Fitr holiday between the period of 28 July and 2 August.

Colonel KhamisIshaq Mohammed, Deputy Director of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, explained that the traffic accidents on those roads and highways were mainly caused by speeding and inattention.

He also explained that the traffic accidents registered during the Eid holiday varied among incidents involving run-overs, crashes, and swerving. In total, 17 accidents were recorded in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, 11 of these accidents were in the city of Abu Dhabi and resulted in three deaths and five serious injuries. There were four accidents in the city of Al Ain which resulted in two deaths, and two accidents in the Western Region, Al Gharbia, which resulted in one serious injury.

Colonel Mohammed stressed the keenness of the police to intensify their efforts through traffic awareness programs and to reduce traffic accidents through initiatives such as the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrol Directorate’s campaign, "Together.” This program aims to improve the behavior of road users through the applications of laws and safety standards, and to increase the general awareness and education of road users. The campaign specifically hopes to increase seat belt and helmet use, reduce speeding, spread awareness about safely crossing roads, achieve safe transportation methods for students, and target various other dangers that cause traffic accidents.

In order to limit the number of accidents and the dangers of driving, Colonel Mohammed urged pedestrians and motorists to comply with traffic laws and regulations, to observe the necessary precautions on the road, and to use proper etiquette and manners. He stressed on the importance of yielding, driving in the designated lanes, using indicators prior to changing lanes, keeping a safe distance, and considering the overall conditions of the road.
