UAE and the Republic of the Maldives have signed a customs agreement which will see the two countries cooperate on removing trade barriers between them through exchange of data and expertise on consignments, customs policies and training on inspection and procedures.
Acting Director-General of Federal Customs Authority (FCA), Khalid Ali Al Bustani, said the agreement is part of UAE's interest in enhancing trade and economic cooperation with all its trade partners based on the fact that UAE plays a pivotal role in Middle East trade as a major trade gateway in the Gulf region.
The agreement is also aimed at protecting the society from improper commercial practices, according to Saud Salim Al Akroubi, Head of International Relations at FCA.
Al Bustani and Commissioner General of Maldives Customs Service, Ahmed Mohamed, recently signed the agreement in Dubai.
Between 2009 and 2013, two-way trade between UAE and the Maldives reached AED 943 million, of which AED 926.6 million were UAE's exports and re-exports to the Maldives and AED 16.5 million were imports from the island nation, noted Al Akroubi.
