The TRA Publishes The ’Facebook White Paper’

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched a white paper on Facebook usage which comes as part of ‘The UAE Social Media White Papers’ collection. The series of awareness documents are designed specifically to highlight the terms and conditions of the most popular social networks in use in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The latest release focuses on ‘Facebook’, which has around one billion users worldwide. In UAE, the gender breakdown of ‘Facebook’ users is 69% male and 31% female.

Facebook is a popular online social networking service that users must register to use. Users must also create a personal profile and add other users as friends. The service offers various features such as a personal timeline showing your activity, a news feed which aggregates various information, messaging, photo sharing and common-interest groups and pages.

The laws of the UAE prohibit the publication of content which is contrary to public morals, the principles of Islam and the social and moral welfare of the UAE or any content that is offended for a nation or its government. In reference to ‘Facebook’ white paper the following information as a priority for all respective subscribers:

Primarily, users should not tag other users without their consent. The UAE law contains broad provisions relating to the protection of privacy and reputation. Besides, users should not share their password or otherwise do anything that might jeopardize the security of their account. Also, ‘Facebook’ has broad rights to use the content which users post, and the right to use them in any way it wants.

The social networks included in ‘The UAE Social Media White Papers’ collection are as follows: Facebook; Twitter; Instagram; YouTube; Yahoo/Flickr; LinkedIn; Gmail; Microsoft Outlook; Apple Store; Blackberry and Keek.
