Themar Academy, a leader in quality qualification-based vocational education and skills training, held a one-day workshop on how to start a business for students from youth centres in Sharjah. The course was part of a four-week Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Certificate program on entrepreneurship at its Abu Dhabi-based premises in twofour54.
The students, aged 14 to 17, met with experts and learnt key skills for business start-ups, such as marketing, accounts, human resources, information technology, and law.
Hala Mohamed Alturki, Chief Executive Officer, Themar Academy, presented on the personal characteristics needed to start up successful businesses. “Successful businesspeople all over the world have entrepreneurial skills and two crucial traits: faith and perseverance.” she said.
A series of program facilitators and guest speakers provided the students with insights about running businesses and answered questions. The students were divided into two teams to develop a brief business plan – including a budget and itinerary – for a trip to a destination of their choice. They then explained their rationale to the facilitators and received feedback.
Alturki added: “Themar Academy aims to address the gap between the Emirati youth and the skills needed in the labour market – both in the UAE and the GCC. This programme taught students how to take the first steps in successful careers. The courses we develop at Themar Academy are designed to be engaging, interactive and memorable, and deliver real outcomes.”
