Under the patronage of Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Zayed International Foundation for the Environment will organise a ceremony to honour the winners of the 6th edition of the Zayed International Prize for the Environment tomorrow Wednesday at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Dubai.
Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water and Chairman of the Higher Committee of the Zayed International Prize for the Environment Honours, in his remarks at the committee's meeting today, said that the prize winners who will be honoured at the ceremony include His Serene Highness Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, who was named the global winner of the prestigious Zayed award, Dr. Ashok Khosla of India, Founder of the Development Alternatives group (DA), whose mission is to help make national development strategies in India more environmentally and socially sustainable, Dr. Zakri Abdul Hamid of Malaysia, Co-Chair of the 2005 Millennium Ecosystem Assessment report, Paula Caballero Gomez, Director of Economic, Social and Environmental Affairs at Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Luc Hoffmann, the renowned Swiss ornithologist.
The Zayed International Prize for the Environment which is worth US$1 million in prize money and is divided equally between the five categories.
The Zayed International Prize for the Environment was established in 1999 by Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to acknowledge the environmental commitment of the late founding father of U.A.E., Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and to recognise the efforts to promote sustainable development through environmental initiatives and the spreading of environmental awareness.
