The Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center concluded the awareness campaign under the title “Together to Prevent Child Abuse and Negligence,” which lasted for a whole month throughout April. The campaign aimed to educate all society categories, particularly children and parents, on the types of violations that children may suffer from, inside and outside their houses. The campaign also aims to raise awareness regarding child negligence, the importance of reporting any abuse and ways to ask for help.
The campaign featured a number of activities through which the awareness team at the center, together with the Information Section, directly communicated with the public, both children and parents. The activities included: the participation in the International Exhibition for Security and National Resilience (ISNR Abu Dhabi 2014); the participation in the exhibition that accompanies the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2014 and World Jiu-Jitsu Children’s Cup; the organization of awareness lectures at a number of government and private school across the country; the distribution of educational booklets in a number of malls, parks, government buildings and residential areas; and the preparation for an awareness family forum regarding the campaign.
Major General Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Child Protection at the Ministry of Interior, said that the campaign reflects the institutional commitment to achieve the UAE 2021Vision, by providing a high quality of life in a generous and sustainable environment. “The Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center strongly believes in the vital role of society in ensuring child protection against all forms of abuse,” he said.
Adding further, Major General Al Nuaimi noted that the center dedicates its attention to social awareness programs, especially those that target parents. This aims to provide them with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to prevent all aspects of child abuse or exploitation within families and communities. He also noted that studies confirm that enhancing parents’ awareness about child abuse issues, the scope of the problem and its consequences on both children and society, helps reduce the reoccurrence of such cases and achieve the desired goal of protecting children against abuse.
For his part, Lieutenant Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shimmari, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center, said: “The campaign targets the public directly and aims to involve all society members within the efforts of protecting children against all kinds of abuse. Building and supporting protection by communicating with children and families is the best thing we can do for our society in relation to child abuse.”
Captain Majid Al Hashimi, Information Security Officer, said: “It is very important to raise awareness on technology violence against children as part of child abuse, especially with the wide spread of modern technology among children from all ages. Spreading awareness among parents and educators regarding this phenomenon and the ways to detect and prevent it, are very essential elements to fight child abuse and eliminate it before it spreads.”
On the other hand, Noora Al Mahri, the campaign coordinator, explained that importance of communication with children during diriment activities. She also shed light on raising awareness on child abuse and negligence. “We need to create programs and means to directly communicate with government entities responsible for child protection. We should also provide social support to families, schools and other sectors who deal directly with children. Parents, especially mothers, are essential to protect children against any abuse. Thus, it is their responsibility to educate their children and urge them to report any abuse, as parents represent the frontline to which children will resort for advice, support and protection against any dangers,” she said.
