Ericsson Demonstrates Sustainable Cities At Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
(1 May 2014)

The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair has been inaugurated at the Abu Dhabi International Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). Ericsson, being the official ICT Partner of the Swedish Embassy at the fair, is showcasing its position as a key player in shaping sustainable cities.

According to Ericsson, the world's top 600 cities generate about 60% of global GDP, although they are currently home to only 22% of the world's population. As more people move to cities, there will be growing pressure on public transportation, water and air quality, employment, urban planning, as well as growing income gaps. Ericsson is showcasing the ICT-enabled solutions and other delivered initiatives with partners around the world to create more sustainable, better integrated and connected cities.

Top executives from Ericsson Region Middle East will be present at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair’s inauguration session. Joe Battikh, Head of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility at Ericsson Region Middle East, will also deliver a key note speech during the event, focusing on the ICT impact on Education and the “Connect to Learn” initiative in particular. This initiative, of which Ericsson is the project’s lead technology partner, aims to benefit educational needs in less developed countries with a special emphasis on providing education for girls.

“There are boundless opportunities for a sustainable future in the world that we live in and increasingly so as we progress into The Networked Society,” said Victoria Strand, President of Gulf Council Countries at Ericsson. “At Ericsson, we consider sustainability to be an essential component of our business strategy; it allows us to positively impact the world that we serve, establishing a stronger future for tomorrow’s generations and enabling positive business outcomes.”

Ericsson uses its competence and solutions to address global challenges, empowering people, businesses and society to inspire the adoption of more sustainable practices. In the Networked Society, in which everything that can benefit from being connected will be connected, Ericsson is the leading advocate of Technology for Good, through which it uses connectivity services – such as broadband, cloud and mobility – to address issues such as poverty, education, health and more.
