Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation To Join Electric Power Research Institute
(20 April 2014)

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced that it has joined the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) nuclear research program. The membership will enable ENEC to access a wide array of EPRI research results and technical guidance that can inform the development and operation of the United Arab Emirates’ commercial nuclear energy program. The collaboration also will enable EPRI and its global membership to collect data and draw lessons from ENEC’s plants under construction that can be shared with the broader nuclear industry.

Energy demand in the United Arab Emirates is growing at an annual rate of about 9 percent, three times the global average. In late 2009, ENEC selected a team led by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to design, build and help operate four 1,400-MW civilian nuclear power units. The first is scheduled to begin providing electricity to the grid in 2017, with the three later units being completed by 2020.

“ENEC’s membership in EPRI is a clear demonstration of its commitment to the open exchange of information among the global nuclear community,” said Neil Wilmshurst, EPRI vice president and chief nuclear officer. “EPRI’s collaborative model provides a two-way mechanism through which we can learn from them and they can learn from us. We expect the collaboration to be strong from the beginning, especially since we already have strong ties with the South Korean nuclear program.”

“ENEC is committed to continuous learning and improvement, and our partnership with EPRI will allow us to interact with global nuclear energy experts, and benchmark our activities with international best practice,” said Mohamed Al Hammadi, chief executive officer at ENEC. “We are pleased to be associated with an organization that values safety, integrity and transparency as much as we do.”
