E-Citizen programme, an e-learning initiative launched by Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre (ADSIC) in 2012, has been shortlisted for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) project prize.
Abu Dhabi e-Government’s innovative e-Citizen programme, managed by ADSIC, is competing with 13 international projects in the “ICT applications: benefits in all aspects of life” category at WSIS, reaffirming its outstanding achievements in promoting e-learning across the Emirate. ADSIC is encouraging all Abu Dhabi community members to vote online for e-Citizen programme through their official website (www.ADSIC.Abudhabi.ae ) before the deadline on 18 April 2014.
Abdul Karim Al Raeesi, Director of Strategy & Planning at ADSIC, said “We are privileged to have our ongoing efforts to spread e-literacy in the community recognized by international societies such as WSIS. The 21st century is the digital era and we have identified basic ICT skills that will allow community members to adapt and be part of today’s digital age. With the overwhelming interest in the e-Citizen programme, we anticipate thousands of trainees for the year.”
Al Raeesi added, “The tailored training courses will develop ICT competencies and promote the use of electronic devices amongst parents, women and elderly citizens in rural areas across the Emirate. Taking into account the needs of our targeted community members, we have scheduled all our training courses in Arabic language and created an instructor-led classroom environment to ensure the successful delivery of the courses.”
WSIS is a prestigious United Nations (UN) summit committed to building a people-centric information society. The WSIS project prize recognizes excellence in implementing development-oriented strategies that leverage the power of information and communication technologies (ICTs).
Launched in 2012, the e-Citizen Programme is a free computer and Internet training programme developed for people with limited knowledge of IT. In 2012, the programme provided trainings to 574 individuals that primarily consisted of housewives and parents. In the following year, numbers increased by nearly 150 per cent, reaching 1,416 people in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Western regions.
Instructors from the Higher Colleges of Technology teach trainees basic computer skills, how to surf the Internet, use social media platforms and access online services. In addition, they are educated on what precautionary measures to take in order to safely use the Internet and avoid identity theft, phishing scams, viruses and spyware.
The e-Citizen programme is held in partnership with Family Development Foundation, Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) and Interdisciplinary Council on Development and Learning (ICDL).
At the end of the programme, trainees undergo a certified international 45-minute online test. Successful candidates receive the international "e-Citizen Certification", issued by ICDL GCC Foundation.
