TRA Outlines Key Priorities For The ITU Telecommunication Development Sector Through The UAE Policy Statement Delivered At WTDC 2014
(3 April 2014)

Throughout the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2014 (WTDC 2014) participating ITU Member States have delivered national policy statements outlining the key priorities for the ITU Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D). H.E. Majed Almesmar, TRA Deputy Director General for Telecommunication Sector, delivered the official UAE policy statement and outlined a number of strategic priorities for ITU-D over the next four years. The statement included a range of topics including capacity building in developing countries, emergency telecommunications and Internet public policy issues such as Internet governance, cybersecurity, e-learning, e-health and enabling technology to assist those with disabilities.

H.E. Almesmar praised the UAE Leadership’s effort in the area of ICT, where the national ICT sector is widely recognized as one of the most advanced ICT sectors in the world. The UAE seeks to provide an integrated broadband infrastructure. This strategic priority will result in providing high-quality services that advance all aspects of UAE Government service delivery including education, health and financial services for the benefits of UAE residents.

H.E. Almesmar added that the commitment to keep pace with the latest digital innovation is the core of the wider national plan which that diversifies the national economy. H.E. Almesmar stressed that the UAE’s delegation will continue to coordinate and work closely with all member states present to achieve consensus on some of the industry’s most important topics.

H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA Director General and the Chairman of the WTDC-14 said: "This statement reflects the strategic vision of the United Arab Emirates in its role in achieving sustainable development. I would like to issue a message of appreciation to the UAE for its ongoing effort to bridge the gap between developed and developing countries in the provision of broadband services. The UAE broadband rate has surpassed 70 % while in other countries it is below 20%. This reality reminds us of how imperative it is for all delegates present to coordinate efforts and create innovative solutions that extend the benefits of ICT to all those who need it."

The WTDC 2014 was launched on Sunday in the Dubai World Trade Centre and will run until April 10th. This year's conference, held under the theme "Broadband for Sustainable Development" and to date has been attended by over 1,500 delegates and more than 50 ministers of communication and information representing over 150 ITU Member States.
