Under this year’s ‘Youth at the Festival’ platform, Abu Dhabi Festival 2014 presents The Space Sessions - a series of creative evenings for young people to curate and programme small-scale events across a range of art forms during the month of March. Hosted at ‘The Space’ twofour54, this year’s Festival organised by the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) strives to enable youth to express their vision for the future of the arts and technology in the UAE through The Space Sessions series, while giving them access to established artists including Emirati soul singer, Hamdan Al Abri, acapella quartet SAMA Quartet, and Emirati actress Amel Almarzooqi.
H.E. Hoda I. Al Khamis-Kanoo, Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and Abu Dhabi Festival: “We are very excited at the prospect of using a new venue in Abu Dhabi - The Space - for a series of fun, contemporary events for young Emiratis and their peers to share, create and innovate together. The Space Sessions is a brand new initiative that enables greater interaction between upcoming and established artists with the local community. Similar to the fringe festival concept that has established itself in other countries around the world, The Space Sessions represent the Abu Dhabi Festival’s first significant step in that direction. Beyond our main programme, we are always looking at new ways to extend the festival experience to all communities across the UAE.”
“From this, we hope that the experience of creative engagement will encourage others across schools, universities and the wider society to develop their own ideas and endeavours, and inspire them to follow their dreams.”
On March 5th, Capital Vibes, the first event in The Space Sessions invites youth to a laid-back evening of cool tunes and great vibes showcasing young Emirati and international musical talent. The evening is curated by Manuel Nivia, a student of New York University Abu Dhabi and founder of the AUHDIO project, an initiative to nurture the capital’s music scene. Capital Vibes will also give attendees the opportunity to meet and watch local talent; the SAMA Quartet, MC Yazen, Physical Graffiti and special guest Hamdan Al Abri, among others.
On March 12th, The Hero Inside Programme: Abu Dhabi presents a comic arts and animation exhibition marking the culmination of a two-month initiative from London. Hosted in partnership with twofour54 tadreeb, the evening exhibits the creative process and illustrations of students from Abu Dhabi schools and New York University Abu Dhabi, depicting their personal heroes inspired by family and friends. Curated by Creative Director, Trevor Kweku Blackwood, and supported by illustrator Dr Hosni Mojahed and actor & filmmaker Amel Al Marzooqi, the initiative has been designed to inspire creative learning, identity and wellbeing among youth.
On March 19th, The Nation Narrates celebrates young Emirati talent in literature, film and illustration. Children and young people are invited to meet Umm Al Duwais, Abu Ras, Nagat Al Eid and all the characters from ‘The Story Mile’, illustrated and designed by the students of Zayed University. The event will also feature screenings of three Emirati films supported by the ADMAF Grants Scheme - ‘Safi’ by Ahmed Zain, ‘Dreams in Their Eyes’ by Abeer Al Marzouqi, Khawla Al Maamari & Ayesha Al Amri, and ‘Feeding the 500’ by Rafed Al Harthi.
Each event in The Space Sessions takes place at The Space, twofour54 between 6pm - 9pm. Events are free to attend but registration is necessary. For registration, please contact: education@admaf.org
