He noted that the UAE is no longer on the top ten list, and the initial indicators of the study conducted by the EMA, in cooperation with specialized entities, show a significant decline in disease rates in the country. He said that the decline was a result of the awareness campaigns, people’s knowledge of the factors that cause the disease, and the public’s tendency to practice sports, especially after the municipalities constructed pathways for walking. Hementioned that this tendency helps patients control their blood sugar levels and reduce their weight, which is a main factor that causes the disease.
Dr. Al Madani continued that recent years have witnessed the emergence of new medicines for diabetes that leadto good results and control blood sugar levels. He pointed out that maintaining good blood sugar levels helps patients avoid other complications that may affect their retinas, blood vessels, kidneys and hearts. He noted that it is now widely known that diabetesis a silent disease that has serious implications on other body organs. He said that the World Health Organization (WHO) noted in its last report that there are five chronic, non-communicable diseases that include diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and heart diseases, which constitute 65% of total causes of death in the UAE.
