Children in Abu Dhabi were taught first-hand about the importance of road safety, thanks to the Michelin Man Academy.
Following a successful pilot scheme in 2013, Michelin Tyres is continuing its road safety initiative in 2014 in the UAE, by extending the programme to Abu Dhabi.
The road safety initiative, called the Michelin Man Academy after the company’s much-loved mascot, was launched in Abu Dhabi with about 500 students at the GEMS Cambridge School. The programme combines the concepts of entertainment, education, and empowerment.
The Michelin Man Academy brings key road safety messages into classroom through games, quizzes, music, videos and an interactive learning kit. The programme then gives children the opportunity to become observers and then ambassadors of good road safety messages.
“Any parent will attest to the fact that children are a force to be reckoned with when they are determined to do something. With the Michelin Man Academy, we are hoping to harness this strength of conviction and action of the kids towards making powerful changes for themselves and their loved ones,” said Rebecca Lee, Director of Communications for Michelin Africa, India, and Middle East.
Ms. Lee added, “Through this programme, we have already witnessed results where kids have started to internalize the safety messages, and are also influencing their family and peers on embracing good road safety practices.”
Mrs Banoo Ragaby, a class teacher from GEMS Cambridge International School, said: “Bringing the messages of road safety into the classroom is a wonderful idea. The Michelin Man Academy’s use of videos, a quiz, and role playing will really drive home the importance of being careful on the road.’ ‘The children are our future drivers, and targeting them from a young age will ingrain road safety into their way of thinking’ she added.
The Michelin Man Academy is part of a wider road safety campaign being carried out by Michelin in the United Arab Emirates. Michelin recently partnered with the Roads and Transport Authority and Tasjeel in Dubai to improve road safety, especially around tyres, with the launch of an information campaign on key elements to check before the annual vehicle registration.
